All Around Fence Builds Split-Rail Fence Across Terraced Wooded Yard

PASADENA, MD – November 03, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE –

The owners of a wooded, terraced lot in Crownsville wanted a fence that would keep their pets and small children in the yard without making the trees and open ground feel walled off. All Around Fence built them a three-rail wood split-rail fence lined with welded wire mesh, running it along the tops of the property’s timber retaining walls and finishing the job in November 2025. The company today released details of how the fence was fitted to the slope and finished with two matching custom gates.

All Around Fence is a family-owned contractor based in Pasadena that has built fences in Anne Arundel County for more than 25 years. Jim Ver Hoef started the business, and his son, Jeremy Verhoef, now runs it day-to-day. Every project starts and ends with one of the two owners on site.

The company works under Maryland Home Improvement Commission license No. 97820. The commission is the state agency that licenses home improvement contractors. The Better Business Bureau rates the company A+.

The Crownsville yard is not flat. It slopes across several tiers, and each tier is held in place by a timber retaining wall, a wall built from heavy wood timbers that holds back the soil of the level above it. Solid boards from post to post would have enclosed the yard, separating it from the trees. An open rail fence on its own would have left gaps wide enough for a small dog or a toddler to slip through.

The company used a three-rail post-and-rail design, often called split rail, in which horizontal wood rails run between wood posts and the fence marks a boundary while leaving the yard open. The posts and rails are pressure-treated, meaning the lumber has been treated with a preservative that helps it resist rot and insects. Dark welded wire mesh, a grid of metal wire joined at each crossing, is fastened to the inside face of the rails, where it closes the openings between them. Because the fence sits along the top of those walls, its rails follow the grade of the yard instead of running level.

The two custom gates are identical. Each has an arched top and vertical pickets and is reinforced with an A-frame brace, two diagonal boards that meet near the top of the gate in the shape of the letter A. Bracing like this is a common way to keep a gate from sagging out of square over time.

Before a design is settled, one of the owners measures the property using a process the company calls the Maryland Measure Method, which accounts for the grade on each site. Utility lines are marked before any digging begins.

“The hard part on a lot like this is the fence line, because it has to sit on the walls and still look like one fence from the top level to the bottom,” said Jeremy Verhoef, owner of All Around Fence.

“You build to what the yard gives you. A straight line drawn on paper doesn’t help much on ground like this. A fence that fights the grade never looks right, no matter how well it’s built,” Verhoef said.
